Sound Blender

A spoken word appears when every letter-sound or sound chunk is blended smoothly from left to right; the same ordered sounds can be segmented to build the written word.

What your child will figure out

  • Blend all phonemes in common CVC words and select the matching picture without relying only on the first sound.
  • Segment a pictured word and place its sound tiles in left-to-right order.
  • Keep initial consonant blends such as bl and str audible while blending the rest of the word.
  • Recognise sh and ch as digraphs where two letters represent one sound, then transfer the strategy to generated words.

The levels

  1. Wake the word

Predict a pictured meaning after hearing c-a-t blend from left to right, then observe the complete spoken word.

  2. Build the sunshine

Act on the reverse relationship by segmenting sun and ordering s-u-n beneath its picture.

  3. Blend bridge

Keep bl together in block, choose the matching picture, and explain that every sound joins the word.

  4. Super blend

Observe that the longer initial blend str stays intact while blending string.

  5. Chick hatch

Transfer blending and segmenting to a new digraph word where ch and ck are sound chunks.

Ready when they are.
